Pirates on your porch are real and they want your packages

The convenience of online shopping has become a staple in Australian households, with a click of a button bringing the world to our doorstep. However, with this rise in doorstep deliveries comes a new breed of opportunistic thieves known as ‘porch pirates’. These modern-day buccaneers are making off with parcels left unattended, leaving many Australians frustrated and out of pocket.

A recent survey by Finder involving 1011 participants revealed a staggering statistic: one in five Australians, equating to approximately 4.1 million people, have experienced parcel theft or loss in the past year. The financial impact is considerable, with the average value of missing packages amounting to $145—that’s a national total of around $606 million in lost deliveries annually. In comparison, the United States has seen an estimated $US12 billion worth of deliveries stolen, according to Security.org.

The issue is particularly prevalent among younger shoppers, with around 30% of Gen Z respondents reporting lost or stolen parcels. This not only represents a significant financial toll but also a considerable inconvenience for consumers who eagerly await their purchases.

But there are effective steps you can take to safeguard your precious cargo from these modern marauders. Here are some tips to help keep your packages safe:

1. Use package tracking

Most delivery services, including Australia Post, offer package tracking. This feature allows you to monitor your delivery’s journey and receive updates on its status. By using an app, you can see when your package is out for delivery and when it has been dropped off. With this information, you can arrange to be home when the package arrives or ask a neighbour or friend to collect it on your behalf, reducing the chance of it being stolen.

2. Install a security camera or video doorbell

The presence of a security camera or video doorbell can be a powerful deterrent to porch pirates. These devices, available at most hardware or appliance stores, often allow for real-time streaming to your phone, enabling you to watch as your package is delivered. Many also feature two-way audio, so you can communicate with anyone at your door. Even the sight of a camera can make a would-be thief think twice before attempting to swipe your parcel.

3. Opt for pickup locations

While it may require a bit more effort, choosing to have your packages delivered to a secure pickup location can significantly reduce the risk of theft. Many retailers offer the option to select a pickup point, ensuring your items remain secure until you’re able to retrieve them.

And if the worst should happen and your package is stolen, all is not lost. As Finder’s personal finance specialist Taylor Blackburn points out, if you’ve paid with a credit card that includes purchase protection, you may be entitled to a refund. This coverage often extends to a wide range of retail items, from clothing and jewellery to electronics and artwork.

While ‘porch piracy’ is an unfortunate reality in our digital age, taking proactive measures can greatly reduce the risk of falling victim to these thefts. By staying vigilant and utilising the tools and services available, you can enjoy the convenience of online shopping without the worry of your goods going missing.

  1. One of the benefits of living rural is neighbours and people generally are really honest.
We have a medium size lidded bin beside our letterbox, 100m away from the house, and our Postie leaves our parcels in the bin.
