Signed, sealed… stolen: Australia Post worker’s $400,000 theft busted

In a tale that reads like a crime thriller, an Australia Post contractor from Sydney has been exposed for orchestrating a shocking theft operation, stealing a staggering $400,000 worth of items from unsuspecting recipients’ mail packages.

The brazen thefts, which went undetected for months, included a lavish array of jewellery, high-end watches, premium alcohol, and gift cards.

According to the Australian Federal Police, the thefts unfolded over a period spanning from November 2021 to May 2023.

The 43-year-old man from Bexley, whose trusted position within the postal system was exploited for personal gain, faced the music at the Downing Centre District Court on Tuesday. The court handed down a sentence of two years and three months imprisonment, with the possibility of release after serving 15 months, contingent on good behaviour for the following two years.

The saga began to unravel when reports surfaced in May 2023 of ‘a man tampering with postal packages.’ This led to an investigation and a subsequent search warrant executed at the man’s residence. There, authorities discovered a treasure trove of stolen goods valued at nearly $398,000, alongside $39,000 in cash—the ill-gotten gains from the sale of tobacco also pilfered from mail packages.

The haul seized by police was nothing short of astonishing: an estimated $138,000 worth of alcohol, $124,000 in luxury watches, $52,000 in gift cards, and $43,000 in jewellery.

Police also uncovered 24g of methamphetamine, 17.8g of ketamine, and small quantities of cocaine, cannabis, and MDMA, also known as ecstasy.

The Bexley man pleaded guilty to three charges, encompassing postal theft, drug possession, and dealing with proceeds of crime.

AFP acting Superintendent Stuart Millen said the man misused his position to further his own self-interest. Millen emphasised that ‘the AFP has zero tolerance for those who abuse employment access for their own illegal pursuits.’

‘This was an opportunistic attempt to use a trusted position within Australia’s mail delivery system to profit, with no regard to its impact on the community.’

Millen added that ‘the AFP will not hesitate to investigate and prosecute those who abuse this trust.’

The AFP’s swift action, in collaboration with Australia Post, aims to restore public confidence and ensure that such breaches of trust are met with serious consequences.
