After battling a bacterial infection in November 2023 and undergoing open heart surgery in December, he faced yet another challenge with a hip ‘twinge’ in August 2024, leading to unexpected surgery. Just two weeks ago, he underwent a procedure to have his hip replaced with a permanent joint.
Throughout these trials, Barnes has been supported by his wife, Jane, whom he married in May 1981. He took to his official social media account to express his gratitude: ‘I can’t tell you how great it is to be home, to sleep in my own bed,’ he shared. ‘Thank you to the medical teams at St Vincent’s and St Luke’s hospitals who have got me back on my own two feet.’ He made a special mention of Jane, who has been steadfastly by his side throughout his health journey.
