Sometimes, the most extraordinary tales come from the most ordinary of places—like the corner of your living room.
Imagine this: you’re enjoying a peaceful day at home when suddenly, a sound slices through the tranquillity, reminiscent of ‘a screaming chainsaw.’ That’s exactly what happened to Melbourne resident Jennifer Bennett, who found herself on a rollercoaster of emotions as she tried to locate the source of the commotion.
Jennifer’s initial reaction was one of disbelief, trying to believe that she was just imagining the noise. But when her two Border Collies fixed their gaze on her peace lily plant in the corner, she knew she wasn’t alone.
‘I had never heard anything like that before. I had absolutely no idea what it was,’ Jennifer recounted to Yahoo News. The dogs’ intense scrutiny of the plant, coupled with the eerie sound, led her to fear the worst.
‘My brain immediately assumed it was a snake. I was really scared,’ she recalled.
The tension mounted as Jennifer wrestled with her fear. It took over an hour before she mustered the courage to investigate the foliage. To her astonishment, nestled among the leaves was not a snake, but a small sugar glider—a nocturnal creature more accustomed to the high canopies of eucalyptus trees than the interior of a suburban home.
@.jenbennett There’s something in my Peace Lilly… I’m Australian so of course I thought snake…
‘It was such an emotional rollercoaster, but I spent most of my time worrying… and then it was an absolute delight,’ she said, reflecting on the discovery. The sugar glider, with its large, expressive eyes and soft fur, was an unexpected guest that brought her both anxiety and joy.
Jennifer promptly reached out to the Greenpatch Wildlife Shelter for assistance. The conversation took a humorous turn when the rescuer initially thought the sugar glider was outside in a pot, only to realise the situation was quite different with the animal inside her house.
Despite her best efforts to follow the rescuer’s advice and coax the sugar glider into a basket, she found herself at a dead end. The tiny marsupial, though ‘cute,’ was not keen on being moved and made its feelings known by ‘screaming’ whenever Jennifer approached.
When the wildlife expert finally arrived, Jennifer was relieved to leave the delicate task in more capable hands.

The mystery of how the sugar glider entered Jennifer’s home remains unsolved. Perhaps it sought refuge from the heat or was simply exploring new territories. Fortunately, a vet confirmed that the animal was unharmed.
This story serves as a charming reminder that nature can surprise us in the most unexpected ways, even within the walls of our own homes. It also highlights the importance of local wildlife shelters and the invaluable work they do.
