For generations, Allen’s lollies have been a cherished part of Australian confectionery culture, with their Snakes Alive mix being a particular delight for sweet tooths across the nation.
However, the iconic brand has recently announced a significant alteration that’s set to shake up this classic bag of treats, and it’s all centred around one particular snake that has been slithering under the radar.
The orange snake, a staple in the Snakes Alive line-up, has been the subject of a surprising revelation. Allen’s has disclosed that a staggering 50 per cent of Australians rank the orange snake as their least favourite flavour in the mix. Even more astonishing is that 84 per cent of consumers have been blissfully unaware of the actual flavour they’ve been munching on.
For those who have never looked at the back of the Snakes Alive packet, where a handy graph reveals the flavour each colour represents, here’s a quick rundown: red is strawberry, purple is blackberry, yellow is pineapple, green is lemon, and the contentious orange is apricot.
This revelation has even taken comedian and lolly aficionado Tanya Hennessy by surprise, prompting her to exclaim on social media, ‘Wild I know! I can’t. I can’t!’
In response to this widespread flavour aversion, Allen’s has made the executive decision to revamp the orange snake’s taste profile. But they’re not just swapping out the flavour and restocking the shelves; they’re rolling out the red carpet for a grand tasting event.
On March 1, residents and visitors of the New South Wales town aptly named Orange will have the exclusive opportunity to be among the first to sample the new flavour. From 10am to 1pm at Robertson Park, Hennessey will be hosting the taste test, eager to gauge the reactions of her fellow lolly enthusiasts.
‘While we can’t yet reveal the flavour for the taste test, we have made sure that we’ve listened to our passionate fans,’ says Nestlé Head of Marketing Confectionery, Melanie Chen, to 9honey.
So, if you’re keen to be a pioneer in the lolly world and try the mysterious new flavour of the orange snake, make your way to Orange. It’s a unique chance to be part of Australian candy history and to have your say in the future of Snakes Alive.
For those who can’t make it to the event, patience will be a virtue. The rest of Australia will have to wait until the new and improved Snakes Alive hits supermarket shelves nationwide.
In the meantime, we invite you to reminisce about your own experiences with Allen’s lollies. Were you one of the many who turned their noses up at the orange snake, or did you always have a soft spot for the underappreciated apricot flavour?
