Nationwide alert: Popular sauce pulled out from stores—is it in your pantry?

In a move that could stir concern among home cooks across the country, a widely used stovetop simmer sauce has been pulled out from the shelves of major supermarkets due to health concerns.

Mars Australia Pty Ltd has initiated a recall of its MasterFoods Creamy Chicken And Mushroom Cooking Sauce, a staple in many kitchens, after discovering that the product contains an undeclared allergen.

This oversight over the undeclared allergen—egg—poses a serious risk for individuals with egg allergies or intolerances, who could experience adverse reactions if they consume the sauce. Food Standards Australia New Zealand, the regulatory body overseeing food safety, has issued a warning to consumers about the potential danger.

The recall affects the 490g jars of the MasterFoods sauce, which have been distributed widely in Coles, Woolworths, and independent grocers, including IGA, in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and the Australian Capital Territory.

The specific jars in question are those with the best-before dates of 17/11/2025, 22/12/2025, 16/02/2026, 20/04/2026, and 15/06/2026.

Customers who have purchased the sauce are advised to inspect their pantries and immediately cease using the product if it falls within the specified best-before dates.

‘Consumers who have an egg allergy or intolerance should not consume this product. Consumers can dispose [of] the product or return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund. Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice,’ states the recall notice.

For those seeking more information or who may have concerns regarding the recall, Mars Australia Pty Ltd can be contacted via 1800 816 016 or contact@auf.mars.com
