Pantry magic: An unexpected trick to keep onions fresh for months

We are always seeking ways to simplify our lives and make the most of what we have, especially with weekly grocery shopping. Many of us could do without this chore, but when we’re faced with food going bad before we’ve had the chance to enjoy it, we’re left with no choice.

However, what if there was a way to extend the life of some of our staple foods using items we already have tucked away at home? It’s a surprisingly effective method for keeping onions fresh, and it involves an item from a place you might not expect: your underwear drawer.

Scott Evans, a sustainability expert from Pink Storage, has shared a quirky yet brilliant trick that can keep onions fresh for months, and it’s likely you already have everything you need to try it. The secret? A pair of sheer stockings.

Yes, you read that correctly. It may sound odd, but this old-school trick has stood the test of time for a reason.

Here’s how it works: Take a clean pair of sheer stockings and place an onion into one of the legs. Tie a knot directly above the onion, add another onion, and tie another knot. Continue this process until the leg is full, then hang the stockings in a cool, dry place.

The genius of this method lies in the knots. By tying the stockings between each onion, you create a barrier that prevents moisture and rot from spreading from one onion to the next. This simple step can drastically extend the shelf life of your onions, reducing the frequency of those dreaded grocery runs.

Interestingly, this same storage trick can be applied to garlic as well. Garlic, like onions, benefits from good air circulation and separation to prevent moisture buildup and sprouting. By using the stocking method for garlic cloves or whole bulbs, you can keep them fresh for an extended period. Simply alternate garlic and onions in the stocking, or dedicate a separate stocking for garlic alone.

This hack is not only practical but also a nod to a more sustainable lifestyle. By reducing food waste and making use of something as unexpected as stockings, you’re contributing to a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Plus, with the warmer months upon us, it’s the perfect time to repurpose those stockings that might otherwise sit unused.

So next time you’re stocking up on onions, remember this handy tip. Not only will it save you time and money, but it will also give you a quirky story to share with friends and family.

Have you tried this onion storage method, or do you have any other unconventional food storage tips to share? We’d love to hear about your experiences and ideas in the comments below.
