In the culinary world, innovation is often met with a mix of curiosity and controversy, especially when it comes to tinkering with beloved classics. The latest gastronomic creation to stir up a storm is a pizza topping that’s challenging the boundaries of traditional pizza lovers’ palates.
A pizza chain with locations in Victoria and South Australia, has boldly introduced its new pizza offering, and it’s dividing opinions among pizza lovers.
Bubba Pizza’s new offering—a ham and orange pizza—features a tomato base topped with Bubba’s Original Smoked Leg Ham, chunks of fresh orange, and a generous amount of mozzarella.
Available in three sizes, with prices ranging from $12 for a small to $24 for a family-sized pizza, it’s an affordable experiment for the adventurous eater. Meanwhile, for those who can’t get enough of carbohydrates, an additional $5 will get you a box brimming with hot chips.
In a cheeky nod to the perennial pineapple on pizza debate, Bubba Pizza’s marketing material invites diners to ‘break the pineapple divide’ and ‘try orange instead.’ But the response on social media has been anything but mild.

After an image of the citrus-topped creation was posted on an online forum, users were quick to express their shock and awe, with some declaring the pizza ‘revolting’ and others jokingly suggesting that it’s a crime worthy of jail time.
‘Straight to jail,’ one commenter quipped, while another pondered the culinary chaos: ‘Some people just want to watch the world burn.’
‘Some people choose violence,’ joked a third person.
‘I’m solidly in the pineapple camp but I’m willing to put aside my differences and join the fight against this,’ commented someone else.
‘That’s a culinary abomination,’ said another.
The sentiment wasn’t all negative, though. Others defended the unconventional topping, with one user pointing out that ‘salty fatty pork undeniably goes well with sweet fruits, fresh and cooked.’
The user said that the combination of pork and citrus is not unheard of in the culinary world. Orange glazed ham is a staple in many cultures, from South American pork braises to European confit variations, and is also a common ingredient in Chinese, Korean, and Thai marinades and stir-fries.
Their defence highlights that while the pizza might be unusual, it’s not entirely without precedent.
Despite the mixed reactions, some brave souls on social media have expressed their willingness to give the ham and orange pizza a try.
‘I have to admit I am intrigued,’ one commenter wrote, while another remarked, ‘I love pineapple [on] pizza and I’d love to try this.’
‘I’d eat it—I’m up for any fruit on pizza,’ shared a different person.
‘I’d try a slice but I’m not willing to pay money to try it,’ another user admitted, while someone else declared, ‘I’ll try everything once.’
Curiosity, it seems, might just be enough to entice a taste test.
At YourLifeChoices, we understand that food preferences can be deeply personal, and what delights one person might dismay another. Whether you’re a staunch traditionalist or a daring foodie, there’s always something new to discover and discuss.
