Supermarkets are energy guzzlers – though for good reasons. But another major chain is making a move to reduce its energy consumption.

Coles shoppers will notice something different in the refrigerated section and it’s all to do with reducing greenhouse gases so it has to be good. Woolies and Aldi have also been doing exactly this.

In new and renovated Coles stores, there will be glass doors on chilled sections such as meat, cheese and milk. A Coles spokesperson says that adding doors to fridges will reduce energy consumption by more than 20 per cent.

Some shoppers have queried the benefits of the doors given they will be opened frequently. Also, whether they will be inconvenient for less able shoppers.

The move from Coles comes after it was reported that Woolworths and ALDI would place glass doors on their chilled aisles to reduce their energy footprint.

Our local Aldi store set up new fridges with doors back in 2016 or 2017 . That was in Deception Bay .

But will the constant opening and closing of the doors detract from the energy savings?
I do prefer the fridges with doors I feel it is also more hygienic.
