Toilet paper wasn’t the only thing Aussies stashed during the pandemic, we also loved to stash our cash.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) estimated about $50 million to $75 million was being kept under the collective mattresses of Australia during 2020-21, and it appears we haven’t got out of the habit.

The RBA recently released a report that found while demand for $50 and $20 notes was up, very little was being returned to the bank, demonstrating that many everyday Aussies are sitting on a personal stash.

I know of two occasions where a sizeable wad of cash was found after a relative’s death. One was $6000 and the other $30,000, which the owner could have really used in real life. The latter was easily enough found, but the $6000 sum was hidden in various coats that were destined for the op shop.

      Is cash important to you?
