ParticipantThe image of the beer-swilling Aussie may have to be rethought, after new data from the federal government revealed the amount of beer being drunk here each year has fallen to its lowest point in 80 years.
Australians consumed just 82L of beer per capita in 2019-20, which is less than half the 190L per capita recorded between 1974-75.
The data shows Aussie drinkers mostly prefer wine, accounting for 42 per cent of alcohol consumed in Australia.
Spirits such as vodka, gin and tequila also rated higher than beer and have recorded a 10 per cent increase since 2019-20, and a 19 per cent increase since 2016-17.

ParticipantOr it could mean that we can’t afford to buy the commercial stuff anymore so are brewing more of our own.
