A controversial Covid-19 vaccine has been quietly discontinued in Australia, the federal government has confirmed.

AstraZeneca will no longer be available and indeed, has not been available since March 20.

The federal Department of Health and Aged Care confirmed the news in a statement to news.com.au, saying although the vaccine remains provisionally approved in the country, AstraZeneca has decided to “formally discontinue Vaxzevria in Australia”.

I wonder, does it have anything to do with a recent study linking heart issues in young women to the vaccine?

Deakin University chair of epidemiology Catherine Bennett aid despite the adverse reactions and negative press, the vaccine’s impact cannot be underestimated.

“AstraZeneca has saved many lives and we couldn’t have achieved the very high vaccination rates we did ahead of Omicron without it as there just wasn’t the mRNA supply,” she said.

Once Pfizer and Moderna vaccines became the ‘preferred’ vaccine for almost everyone, there was little call for AstraZeneca unless there had been an adverse reaction to the bivalent vaccines. This is nothing to get excited about. Likewise, the Novavax vaccine has not been widely used despite the original perception of it being more ‘natural’.
