Household cleanliness is a very personal thing – we all have different standards – but every so often, a ‘jab’ hits home. Such as this headline: This bathroom item is dirtier than your toilet, experts warn.’
Many of us don’t clean this one standard bathroom item on a regular basis – and some health sources say there could be dire consequences.
Experts say we should wash bathmats every one to two weeks, but research suggest that occurs only once or twice a year.
“A survey found a third admitted to washing their mats just two times a year,” says Rikki Fothergill, a cleaning expert from the UK e-commerce company Big Bathroom Shop.
The bathmat has even more bacteria than a toilet seat, says professional cleaner Bailey Carson.
Frequent washing is important should someone want to keep their bathroom mould-free.
Ms Carson says: “It’s important to note that with increased humidity levels … you may want to wash more often than usual to avoid build-up of mould.”
Do you wash your bathmat regularly? Do you hand it up to dry regularly?
I also read that towel rails and all handles were the least cleaned in a bathroom.
Do they mean the bathmats that go on the floor? Mine gets washed with the towels, because they colour coordinate. If they mean the non slip mats in the bath or shower, then I totally agree – even when I wash mine it still looks gross. I think I need to take it outside and hit it with the pressure washer.
