Scamwatch has sounded an alert on a Medicare-related scam doing the rounds. The watchdog is warning of an influx of counterfeit emails impersonating Medicare.

In the phoney emails, fraudsters posing as Medicare inform the account-holder their account is to be deactivated due to insufficient information supplied. The email then attempts to lure its recipient into providing their private information by filling in a form through a link.

According to the most recent report, Australians lost more than $3 billion to these types of scams in the calendar year 2022, an increase of 80 per cent over 2021.
