ParticipantRetirees in Australia have it pretty good, right? Well, not as good as some, as evidenced by 2023 Global Retirement Index. According to the data, Australia ranks as only the seventh best nation to retire to.
The index praised our long-term retirement visa options, generally sunny climate, comprehensive healthcare services and our relatively safe society.
Our cousins across the ditch in New Zealand only ranked eighth best, so take that! In reality, both our nations are among the best places in the world to retire.
So, who was number one? That honour went, somewhat surprisingly, to Norway. The Scandinavian country consistently ranks as having one of the highest costs-of-living in the developed world. Not to mention the wintery weather.
But while it may be expensive, Norway boasts one of the world’s highest standards of living, and low crime rates, along with a ‘strong sense of community’, making it an ideal destination for retirees.
Top 10 countries to retire to in 2023
1. Norway
2. Switzerland
3. Iceland
4. Ireland
5. Luxembourg
6. The Netherlands
7. Australia
8. New Zealand
9. Germany
10. Denmark -

ParticipantHas the author been to these places. Most of them you’ll freeze for most of the year. Those cold old bones will ache.
