Tax time is when scammers rub their hands together with anticipation.
A myGov scam email targeting millions of Aussies looking forward to a tax refund is on the rise.
The email looks alarmingly legitimate with what appears to be the official myGov logo and language similar to that used by government agencies.
“You have an outstanding refund from myGov,” reads one iteration of the scam email, supplied to 7NEWS.com.au.
“Our transaction management system detects that you are entitled to receive this payment.
“Your refund is available online.
“To accept fast payment online click on the following link and save the refund information.”
The email provides a hyperlink with the text, “access your form” or “secure form”.
Services Australia says the link takes users to a website that will try to extract personal information or get you to download an attachment.
“If you get an email like this, don’t open any links, download attachments or respond,” says Services Australia. “We’ll never ask you to open a link or a file attached to an email.”
The agency says it does “sometimes” email customers, if it’s a chosen method of communication. But those emails will not seek personal details.
Have you received this bogus email? Are you finding these phishing attempts are becoming more regular?
I know the scammers are becoming more advanced with their emails/phone calls, etc., but my motto is if in doubt don’t hit the link or agree to anything on the phone. Always go through the company’s official website and login to your account. Any information will be there if legit. It might take more time, but we have to accept responsibility for the protection of our personal information.
