Bunnings Warehouse is expanding its range for the first time in years – launching a specialty pet care department that will stock items such as food, toys and bowls for dogs, cats and birds.
Bunnings says the new department will open next month and the company is keen to get in on the fast-growing $10 billion pet care industry.
Mike Schneider, managing director of Bunnings, told the Australian Financial Review it was common to see people with their dogs in Bunnings stores, so it was a natural fit to extend their range to pet care.
The pet range will be available in at least one aisle in all Bunnings stores across Australia, with larger outlets dedicating two aisles.
Mr Schneider says Bunnings large scale will allow it to offer pet products at more competitive prices than typical pet shops.
“Our ability to buy bulk volume products, to merchandise that in an appealing way is the group’s main strength when it comes to the animal products market,” Schneider said.

So this is the new reality, 50 years in the making. How many more ‘super-stores’ can proliferate the market? Woolworths and Coles put short shift to the corner store, wiped them off the map. Now if you just want milk you have to get in the car or bus and go to the supermarket instead of a nice stroll to the store. Bunnings putting the knife into the small family hardware stores, garden suppliers and now pet shops.
