The health dangers of sitting all day have been well established. A sedentary lifestyle heightens your risk of certain cancers, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, just to name a few.
But new research has revealed there may be a simple solution to our lazy lifestyles – and it doesn’t involve actually getting up.
A study published in the journal BMC Public Health has demonstrated that drinking coffee can be an effective counter to sitting all day, at least when it comes to lowering risk of disease.
In the study of 10,000 adults, daily sitting time and coffee consumption was measured, and the researchers found those who sat for six or more hours were 1.58 times less likely to die from any cause than non-coffee drinkers. The effect was noticeable as many as 13 years later.
The team found that drinking coffee essentially cancels out the association between sedentary lifestyles and all-cause mortality.
That’s pretty incredible given that studies suggest that even getting up and exercising occasionally may not fully protect against the long-term health downsides of prolonged sitting.
Wooo hooo
How good is that?!!
Sorry, 1.58 times less likely to die???
So if the mortality rate of non-coffee drinkers is 1%, the mortality rate of coffee drinkers is -0.58%?
Perhaps “1.58 times less likely to die” is intended to mean that non-coffee drinkers are 58% more likely to die than coffee drinkers? But it’s not at all clear, to me anyway.
