Costco in the United States has been ordered to recall almost 40,000kg of butter because the label neglected to mention that the butter contained – wait for it – milk.

America’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initially sent out the recall for 36,000kg of Costco’s Kirkland Signature Sweet Cream Butter in both salted and unsalted varieties. The packaging lists milk as an ingredient, but there is no allergy warning for people who are allergic to dairy.

The order has left some internet users scratching their heads. Surely butter, by definition, contains milk. It’s a dairy product. Many social media users have been bemused by the call.

“It’s butter,” one person simply wrote in response to the news.

“I would like a list of people who actually return their butter because of this issue. I want to be sure they are never elected or hired as public officials,” said another.

“We’re so disconnected from what our food is and where it comes from people need labels on everything.”

What do you think? Is the recall fair enough or have they just wasted 40 tonnes of butter for nothing?
