MemberAussies have a reputation of being drinkers – specifically beer drinkers.
The Global Drug Survey 2021, which involved more than 32,000 people from 22 countries, found Aussies ‘got on the beers’ the most. So news of rising beer prices is not the Christmas cheer most want to hear.
Flooding in NSW and Victoria has affected barley crops and barley is a key ingredient in beer. And when supply goes down, prices go up.
NSW Farmers grains committee chair Justin Everitt says barley prices have been going up for quite some time. “Once the breweries’ costs increase … they’ll pass those costs to the consumer,” he says.
So a barley shortage combined with rising production costs due to higher electricity and water prices are pushing beer prices in only one direction. Time to stock up?
Earlier this year, the cost of beer products jumped 4 per cent, so save your pennies for that next pint or schooner.
What’s your favourite beer? Have you noticed prices rising this year?

ParticipantI have noticed that my home-brew beer which used to cost 16 cents now costs me on average 22 cents per stubby. I will have to cut down on my intake if it goes much higher.
