ParticipantThe UK is in election mode and one of the more crazy talking points is bringing back national service.
Frankly, for me this is a sign of a party desperate to deflect from the problem that they have no decent policy programs, but it’s the logistics that confuse me.
How do they expect this will all happen? The infrastructure to support such a move will be in the billions. And the armed forces won’t be particularly thrilled about having to train a bunch of kids, most of whom don’t want to be there.
Here’s a thought. All that money they plan to spend on national service goes towards improving education. There is already infrastructure in place, it’s merely a matter of funding it better from pre-school through to university. But that wouldn’t get headlines now, would it?
What do you think, should national service be brought back?

ParticipantNo and it will never happen. Just desperate politics by the Conservatives.
The reason it will never happen is that the armed forces would never accept most of today’s youth into their ranks. -

ParticipantNational Service is a great idea and the govt should go ahead with it..why not put all these teenages that are stealing cars, home invaders, etc, etc, instead of putting them in prison, put in the army to learn respect, discipline, and a trade. Our defence force is sow low ,if we had to defend our country we wouldn’t have the man power.. Our Politicians are to weak to make a decision like this as they want the votes to stay in..But the way the world is going with all the wars going on, it wont be long before it will affect us..Or do we say : WECLOME TO COUNTRY :

ParticipantYes, I believe they should. Any naughty young ones should be made to enlist for a couple of years as a punishment for their misbehaviour. This might deter people from committing crimes due to them being bored and unemployed. Persons 17 years old or above who have committed a crime should have to join the ADF for a limited number of years as their punishment.

ParticipantI don’t much care what the UK does, but Australia should. We have a shortage of manpower in our Defense forces and endeavors to attract people to enlist are failing.
Many years ago, youth who committed crimes were given the choice of jail or join the military. Military service saved a great many young people. They learned discipline and self-respect, and some learned a trade as well. There are many out there who say being compelled to make that choice, and choosing military service, was the best thing that ever happened to them. Why are we not giving troubled kids that option now? -

ParticipantHaven’t we progressed past national service? There is a distinct unwillingness to fight wars these days, as people recognize the futility of it all. Nothing is ever achieved by war, everyone, except the banks financing wars, loses. In the end there is always a negotiated settlement.

ParticipantYes National Service was good fore and my mates, it taught me a lot about life and what was going on around me. I was tied up in the church prior to National Service. Granted I didn’t go Vietnam Had I done so it may have changed my outlook.??

ParticipantDefinitely. It would teach the youth respect and discipline and maybe even a trade.
There are no consequences for bad behaviour these days and the world is getting worse. It is all good and well for Frankly to say nothing is ever achieved by war, but without an able defence force we may as well open our borders and let everyone take our freedom away. Not on my watch! It is time our politicians grew a few and introduced some rules which may be unpopular for some do-gooders who bury their head in the sand.
