Beer is about to get even more expensive, retailers are warning, when yet another increase to the federal government’s alcohol excise tax comes into effect next month.

From 1 February, the tax will rise to a staggering $60 per litre of pure alcohol, meaning the average price of a pint in a pub could rise to more than $15.

John Preston, CEO of the Brewers Association of Australia, told the Herald Sun industry is pushing the government to freeze the tax for the sake of both brewers and customers.

“In many venues, people are paying over $15 for a pint. This is a huge amount considering how tight the family budget is,” he said.

The tax on a $55 carton of beer will exceed $20, while the tax on a keg will rise by approximately $2 to $78.

$60.00 for 1 litre 100% alcohol means? 1.75 pints to a litre so (divide $60.00 by 7)x4 = $34.00 rounded. About 5% alcohol in your average beer. So, divide $34 by 20 = $1.70 tax minus what the previous tax was. Doesn’t seem to justify prices of $15.00. But unfortunately, or fortunately I can remember buying a Schooner of Beer for 2 shillings. As the son of an Alcoholic father, I appreciate what the Government is doing so I cannot agree with ndhallam39 regarding GST.
