When you’re trying to fall asleep at night, do you ever getting a sudden ‘falling’ sensation that feels as if you’re dropping from a dangerous height? It’s very common, and even has a name – a ‘hypnagogic jerk’.

While this phenomenon is normal and happens to almost everyone, if you find this happening to you most nights it can begin to have a detrimental impact on your sleep patterns.

Sleep experts suggest there are a number of things you can do to prevent hypnagogic jerks such as establishing a regular sleep routine; ensuring you sleep in a dark environment free from external stimuli; practicing relaxation techniques in the leadup to bedtime and limiting your intake of stimulants such as coffee.

Do you ever have trouble falling asleep?
