MemberA record number of Australian families could experience faster internet under a newly proposed plan set by the National Broadband Network to replace outdated connections.
The upgrade scheme offers full-fibre connections at no extra cost for an estimated 2 million households.
Upgrading requires opting into a high-speed plan through the household’s current internet service provider.
This initiative is boosted by a hefty $2.4bn infusion included in the 2022 October budget.
An enhanced browsing and gaming experience is promised by NBN, including a substantial reduction in download times for large files such as video games.
The upgrade plan is part of the government’s $2.4bn election pledge to bolster internet access across the nation, targeting specifically over 660,000 premises in regional areas.
Communications Minister, Michelle Rowland, praised this upgrade’s potential benefit for data-intensive households and businesses that depend on robust broadband.
Fibre-to-the-home was a key component of Labor’s NBN plan, discontinued post the 2013 election, suggesting a return to the original vision.
Is this all a little confusing or are you up-to-speed with this internet upgrade offer?

ParticipantSo it’s taken the return of a Labor government to bring us the NBN we could have had years ago.
The LNP wasted billions of dollars building their inferior network which now has to be upgraded when it should have been done right in the first place. -

ParticipantThis is almost the NBN we were originally promised BUT the catch is, if you are not already Fibre to the Home the only way you get the “free upgrade” is to sign up to a more expensive higher speed and data plan. Then you will be assessed for free connection. You may still be up for additional infrastructure costs, plus a more expensive plan, in order to get this “free” upgrade.
“no extra cost”? Hah!
Discrimination?
NBN available equally to all?
Still stuffed!
