Is the beginning of the end of the democracy sausage?

Many people love the rise of the mail-in vote. It’s cheaper than setting up and manning voting stations and you can vote at your leisure.

But I think Australia and Australians are forgetting one important thing, there are no democracy sausages for mail-in or early voting.

Is the rise of mail voting and pre-poll voting the end of this delicious tradition? The white bread, the supermarket sausage and sauce and nearly burnt onion, what makes it all so perfect? Not sure, but it works.

Let’s look towards Queensland’s current election. It’s estimated 1.2 million people have already voted before the official election day tomorrow. That’s a lot of sausages not consumed and funds not raised for local communities.

Premier Steven Miles made his first commitment in days by promising democracy sausages at pre-poll booths if Labor wins a fourth term.

“An important reform to democracy that I would like to see would be democracy sausages at pre-poll,” he told reporters outside Nambour Hospital on Thursday.

“I commit to Queenslanders to work as hard as I can to ensure that there are sausages at pre-polls.”

“Not sure how to do it for postal votes, but we’ll work on that.”

Do you vote early. Do you miss the sausages?

I vote early. Can’t cope well with crowds anymore, more likely to fall these days, as well. Witness the cast on my broken arm! So no democracy sausage. If I was near one, I’d buy it to support the school or whatever venue. But I don’t miss it.
