It’s swooping season, but it’s not just magpies

      I grew up on this street and getting to school in spring was an exercise in terror. Unfortunately the alternative route doubled my travel time, so we regularly resorted to nothing more than running fast and waving our school bags at them. Bad luck if they were too heavy, you were on your own.

      But the last time I was swooped it was a noisy miner, which came back for seconds and I had to swing my handbag at it like an ageing ninja.

      Other birds to look out for include the magpie lark, butcher bird, and if you are really unlucky owls, but only when you climb too close to their nests.
