Kia has recalled thousands of cars over fears they will catch fire.

The company has issued a recall over an engine fault that could cause the vehicle to catch fire or suddenly lose power.

SL Sportage, YD Cerato, XM Sorento models sold between 2011 and 2015 are affected by the potentially fatal fault.

More than 5000 cars have been recalled over the fault.

The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts warned the malfunction could be fatal.

“(It) could increase the potential risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, bystanders and/or damage to property,” it said.

Owners of affected vehicles should immediately contact a Kia dealership to schedule an engine inspection.

The engine will be replaced free of charge if required.

You can check if your car is affected by entering your vehicle identification number (VIN) number here.
