ParticipantIt’s been announced the federal government will allocate an extra $4.8 billion to aged care in the next budget, but the sector has warned it will not be enough to keep all homes open.
It’s estimated the cost of aged care will soon be up to one-fifth of the nation’s budget.
I don’t mind our older Australians being well looked after in their later years, but the oversight of these budgets seems very shaky. The government constantly tips money into for-profit services with very little oversight or fiscal responsibility.
I’m the last person to encourage more bureaucracy, but constantly increasing the budget without little oversight seems like pouring good money after bad.
The industry cites new staffing rules and greater demand is putting more pressure on aged care facilities, but the staffing rules just mean the centres should have qualified staff 24/7, and shouldn’t they do that anyway?
Do you think aged care is adequately funded and supervised?
