It seems there are some baby names that just keep dominating the charts – and classrooms for years to come.
Naming data reveals that Oliver was the most common name given to baby boys across five states in 2023, while Charlotte ranked highly for girls.
Charlotte was in the top five baby names for girls in Victoria, NSW, Western Australia, Queensland and Tasmania last year, according to the states’ Births, Deaths, and Marriages registries.
Oliver took the number one spot in Victoria, NSW, Western Australia, Queensland and Tasmania in 2023.
Coming in second to Oliver in all but Tasmania, the name Noah has been popular.
In NSW, Noah and Oliver have been the top two baby boy names over the past five years. The top five in NSW are: Oliver, Noah, Leo, Henry and Luca.
In Victoria, the top five are Oliver, Noah, Henry, Leo and Charlie; in Tasmania, Oliver, Charlie, Theodore, Noah and Arlo; in Western Australia, Oliver, Noah, Leo, Henry and Jack, and in Queensland, Oliver, Noah, Henry, Theodore and Hudson.
Charlotte appeared in the top five names for all five states. In NSW, the top five were Isla, Amelia, Olivia, Mia and Charlotte; in Victoria, it was Amelia, Charlotte, Olivia, Mia and Isla; in Tasmania, Hazel, Elsie, Charlotte, Willow and Ruby; in Western Australia, Isla, Olivia, Mia, Charlotte and Amelia, and in Queensland, Isla, Charlotte, Amelia, Harper and Olivia.
South Australia had not published its full list of baby names for 2023, but an indicative list provided in December revealed Oliver was on track to be the most popular boys name for an 11th straight year and Isla the most likely top choice for girls for the third straight year.
