Data from Bupa Pet Insurance has revealed the Cavoodle is once again Australia’s most popular dog breed, and the Domestic Short Hair is our most popular cat.
Bupa drew the info from its pet insurance policy records between July 2023 and June 2024, and found alongside the Cavoodle, Aussies also favour Labradors, Maltese Terriers, Border Collies, French Bulldogs, Golden Retrievers and Miniature Dachsunds.
Cat breeds are a little bit harder to ascertain, but the most popular breeds listed besides Domestic Short Hairs were Ragdolls, Tabbies and Burmese.
Overall, the data showed there are around 28.7 million pets living in 6.9 million households across Australia, with almost half having a dog and around a third with a cat.
Do you have a pet? Do you own any of these dog or cat breeds?
The Cavoodle is a mixed breed of dog, and I don’t like any mixed breed of dog. These were bred just to make money in the beginning and now some people buy them as they can be kept in a unit or house. I prefer a large dog, one that can be trained and walk with me and looks like a DOG, not a toy.
I get where you’re coming from—Cavoodles can seem more like a fashion trend than a genuine breed, and they often aren’t what people envision when they think of a “real” dog. Large dogs definitely have a different presence and can be great companions for walks and training. There’s something special about having a dog that feels substantial and truly like a part of your life.
