America’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has held its first ever public hearing into sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs), referred to by the administration as unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP).

The hearing was told over the past 27 years, more than 800 UAP events had been reported in the US and each month two or three new sightings from pilots are added.

More than half of the reports of anomalous objects said they were spherical or orb-shaped.

The vast majority can be explained as natural phenomena or hoaxes, but between two and five per cent can’t be explained at all, leading many to speculate on the origins of these sightings.

NASA’s Dan Evans told news.com.au that the agency was investigating UAP as whatever they are, they could be a potential hazard to aircraft.

“We have to determine if they pose any risks to air safety, to ensure our skies remain safe,” he said.

However, NASA stopped short of claiming the sightings were evidence of extraterrestrial life visiting our planet.

Have you ever seen anything in the skies you can’t explain?
