Two colonial-era monuments have been targeted in pre-Australia Day vandalism attacks in Melbourne.

A statue of Captain James Cook was sawn cleanly off its stone base, which was in turn spray painted with red words reading: “the colony will fall”.

Elsewhere in the city, a statue of Queen Victoria has also been defaced with red paint.
Marcus Pearl, local councillor for the Port Phillip area, told news.com.au the perpetrator should be “held to account for their actions”.

“This is not a solitary act of mischief,” he said.

“It’s a repeated pattern of disrespect, especially evident around Australia Day for the past six years. Such acts blatantly disregard our community’s hard-fought principles of debate and democratic expression.”
