As if the Qatar World Cup hasn’t been plagued with scandal enough there appears to be a new danger of an actual plague, well … at least a flu.

World Health Organization experts fear a deadlier cousin of COVID, colloquially named ‘camel flu’ may hit the event.

Officially known as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), it has an astonishing fatality rate of 30 per cent, compared to COVID’s 3.4 per cent.

MERS has been named as one of eight potential infection risks – including COIVD and monkey pox – during the four-week long tournament which is expected to host 1.2 million supporters.

Camels are thought to be the natural hosts of the virus and health experts are advising tourists to the area not to touch the animals.

If only you could enjoy a nice cold beer there to take away your worries.
