The number of electric vehicles on the roads is increasing daily – as it should. But that has necessitated changes to parking regulations in some states and territories, which means you could inadvertently end up with a hefty fine.

Little-known penalties in four states and territories could cost drivers of petrol and diesel vehicles as much as $3200 if they park in spaces for electric vehicles.

Some of the fines were gazetted late last year and range from $3200 in the ACT to $369 in Victoria. Drivers in NSW who block public electric vehicle chargers can be fined up to $2200. Queensland followed suit early this year with fines of up to $2757.

The fines also apply to electric car drivers who occupy parking spots while not recharging their vehicles.

Have you seen signs that say parking spots are reserved for recharging electric vehicles?
