In news that might not surprise anyone with an annoyingly loud upstairs neighbour, researchers from the National Research Council of Canada (NRCC) has found that noise from your neighbours is more annoying than any other audible nuisance.

That’s because they are generally short ‘impact sounds’, like stomping feet and dropped objects, and their spontaneity makes them more irritating.

Since these types of noises frequently interrupt sleep, and long periods interrupted sleep is a known heart disease factor, the NRCC says it’s reasonable to conclude that your noisy neighbours could actually be shortening your life.

Do your neighbours make a lot of noise?
