Internal migration data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has found people are moving out of New South Wales at a faster rate than anywhere else in the country.
Every day 320 people leave NSW for another state or territory. In the year to September 2023, 116,946 people left the state, while just 83,744 arrived.
Most of these people moved to Queensland, who saw net population growth for the year, with around 110,000 arriving in the sunshine state versus 77,000 leaving.
Western Australia was the only other state who showed population growth during that period, with about 37,000 moving to the west and around 26,000 people leaving.
Australia’s total population over that period grew to 26,821,557 people. Since that was measured in September 2023, it’s estimated we passed the 27 million mark some time earlier this year.
So where did the 600,000 overseas migrants go and doesnt that have a greater effect than internal movements? If the part picture painted here was true, NSW would be a renters paradise but its clearly not.
Since when have Australian States been ‘who’? When we used the English language correctly, they would have been ‘which’.
