The things (that have nothing to be with The Voice) that we debate – especially on social media and talkback radio! The latest? Should cups, mugs and glasses be stored rim up or rim down?

When an ABC talkback host asked the question, the talkback was divided between the rim uppers and the rim downers, with both sides adamant their way was correct.

So what does author and cleaning expert Shannon Lush say?

“You always put your cups face down [in the tropics] …You’ve got cockroaches, bugs, those sorts of things,” Ms Lush says.

“Cockroaches are really bad; they like cups.”

Lizards, particularly geckos, are also fond of taking a snooze in a porcelain vessel, so storing cups rim down is recommended for houses with unexpected scaly guests.

Ms Lush recommends always storing glasses and cups in cupboards and not on open shelves, if possible, to keep out dust and bugs.

“My cupboards seal really well, so I don’t get bugs in there and I don’t get dust in there, so it’s not necessary to have them face down,” she says.

If you do store cups or glasses rim down, Ms Lush says to make sure they’re completely dry before putting them away so moisture doesn’t get trapped and allow mould to grow.

“And if you are going to put them face down, you always have either a shelf liner or a towel [lying] down first,” she says. “Otherwise, you get dust build-up on the shelf that ends up on your cup.”

How do you store your glasses and cups?

Cups and glasses down jugs up. That’s the way my Mum always did it.
