New South Wales health authorities are warning people not to consume seafood collected or caught in the Broken Bay area, due to an outbreak of toxic algae bloom.

Mussels and oysters, as well as the guts of crabs and lobsters, should not be eaten if they have been caught by recreational fishers in the area.

There are fears the algae could cause Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP), a nasty condition that can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and even death.

But the NSW Food Authority says seafood bought from shops is safe to eat.

“[Shop-bought seafood] “safe to eat because the NSW Food Authority monitors the safety of commercially harvested shellfish.”

Will you be eating oysters this weekend?
