ParticipantIf you’ve noticed a lot more colourful lights at night in your neighbourhood lately, it’s likely due to them celebrating Diwali, the annual Hindu festival of lights.
You might be seeing a bit more of it. There are growing calls from Australia’s Indian community to make Diwali, the annual Hindu festival of lights, a public holiday in Australia.
The date it falls on changes each year as it follows what’s known as the lunisolar calendar, which combines the positions of the moon and the sun.
Hindu Council of Australia president Sai Paravastu told 9news he believes Diwali should be made a national holiday, as thousands of Australians from many different backgrounds celebrate it.
“Hindus have come from 32 plus countries to Australia and call Australia home,” he said.
“This would give [others] an opportunity to use the one day off to understand what these people are doing and they can visit our temples to see what we do.
“It gives them the opportunity to understand us more.”
The move would not be totally unprecedented in the Western world, after New York City declared Diwali a public holiday last year.
What do you think? Does this sound like a good idea, or would it create more problems than it solves?

Participant‘Would it create more problems than it solves?’
What ‘problems’ exist now?
And if we include this what next?
A public holiday for every religion/culture represented in Australia?Australia has generous annual leave provisions. If it is essential that a holiday such as Diwali or any other is observed via a day off then most employers would probably grant a worker this day off from their Annual Leave entitlement.
No, we do not need this public holiday.

ParticipantNo Diwali does not need to become a public holiday.
Orthodox religions currently celebrate Easter on different moon cycles to other religions. They have never asked for any additional public holidays. Also if you want to visit any temple you do not need a public holiday, you may visit on any regular day. -

ParticipantWould other countries celebrate any of Australia’s holidays? I think not.
ANZAC Day is a good example. -

ParticipantNO, otherwise we need a holiday for everyday of the year.
And please do not compare Australia with America in each subject (i.e super in the other article), they are definitely not a good example to follow. What next? free guns ownership? follow the same system for elections? -

ParticipantNO. I would rather all local councils, schools, allow Christmas celebrations to be observed without any restrictions.
