No one can deny Australia has a gambling problem.
We certainly top the worldwide charts at poker machine losses, apart from anything else.
And it’s estimated Australians lose about $25 billion to legal gambling each year.
So should gambling ads be banned? I have to say yes. I don’t gamble at all, but my online world is swamped by gambling ads that make the practice look all glamorous and exciting. When in fact gambling is generally just giving your money away to someone else as the above figures show. And gambling addictions have ruined thousands of families.
We’ve done it before with smoking ads. There was a bit of an outcry, but generally everyone knew it was the right thing to do and we are probably the last generation who can remember the Marlboro Man.
So do you think there should be an outright ban of gambling ads? Or maybe just a partial ban?
I am all in favour of a total ban on gambling advertising. Like smoking and alcohol gambling is addictive so why on earth should the betting companies be allowed into our living rooms to perpetrate this sort of toxic activity. Furthermore, once an advt. goes to air there is no control over who sees it, children or adults, not good!!
Yes, all gambling ads should be banned, even Lotto. This addictions causes so much grief for many families. I personally hate when one of those ads come on and they repeat it every break.
