Retail shops in NSW will have to remain closed until midnight on Anzac Day after the state government announced an extension to retail trading hour restrictions.

Under the old rules, shops were allowed to open after 1pm, but will now have to remain shut for the whole day.

Premier Chris Minns says he made the move to stop “creeping commercialism” ruining the sombre mood of the day.

“For Australians, no occasion could be more solemn or significant than Anzac Day,” he said.

“As of next year, NSW will extend our retail trading restrictions across Anzac Day to make sure our veterans are recognised and free to take part in services throughout the day.”

The move has been controversial to say the least. It has predictably been praised by union groups and slammed by retail associations.

There’s also the question of exemptions. Pubs will be exempt from the ban, so people can still share a beer on the day. Cafes too will be exempt, as not everyone drinks. Some (but not all) newsagencies and convenience stores will be open.

The government says it granted the extensions based on extensive public consultation, but do you think it’s fair some businesses can open while others can’t? Or should all shops be closed completely?
