The cash rate continues to climb in a bid to curb inflation, and belts are tightened further. But there are some things that we refuse to live without.
I imagine a lot of people would say coffee. Or chocolate. A poster on Reddit said it was Dare Ice Coffee – “It’s very addictive.”
Another said: “Coffee – it’s just $4-$6 and gives me joy.”
But Yahoo News finance expert Effie Zahos did the sums and said a $4.50 coffee every day amounted to $65,700 over 40 years – without taking into account inflation.
Another popular item was quality toilet paper – “The day I buy cheap, scratchy toilet paper is the day I end it all.”
Beer, wine and good food were also right up there – “For us, I would say it’s beer and wine and cooking good meals at home.”
Another said: “Beer. Even if it has to be the cheap stuff from Aldi from time to time. I am considering brewing my own soon too.”
Others online said cheese (and those prices have gone through the roof), peanut butter and getting your hair and nails done.
A quick poll of the office backed up the coffee option – “If I could only afford instant, I’d swap to tea” – while others (female of course) said nice moisturiser. Good butter was also tops for some.
What wouldn’t you give up?
Ice-cream
My pets. Companions, entertaining and gentle housemates.
I could not live without my beautiful dog Oscar, he is my family, no word of a lie, he costs’ me more to feed than myself, he is a big boy at 65 kgs, the price of dog food is shocking and goes up every week, and yes it’s very hard, being on a age pension, paying rent, power, plus my Insurance and Oscars Insurance as well, does not leave very much. but Oscar comes first, not his fault the world has gone crazy, I skip meals, and I know I’m not the only one to skip meals, but too proud to ever ask for help. Me buy a cup of coffee! can’t remember ever buying a cup of coffee, so this is something I don’t miss, in fact there is nothing I don’t miss like a coffee! you can’t miss anything you have never had. but if you have truly loved a dog then this is something you would truly miss if you had to give up, but if you are like me this will never happen, it is something no matter what you would never give up.
