I read recently that some local councils in Melbourne were desperate for lollipop people and that the going rate was up to $56 an hour. A nice little earner, I thought, friendly hours and a chance to interact with the kids and parents using the crossing.
Then I read about a 21-year-old ‘traffic engineer’ – you know, those men and women who hold the stop-go signs around building sites and roadworks.
I had heard they earn good money but I was blown away by this employee’s weekly earnings. She claimed she had made $3400 in a single week after working 47.5 hours over five days at a construction site.
For one 9.5-hour shift, she said she made $680.
She said her high wage was due to an enterprise bargaining agreement between her employer and union.
“Normal (construction) sites only pay half of this,” she said.
Still good money for a relatively low-stress job. One for older Aussies to consider?
“a relatively low-stress job” – not really. Many drivers ignore safety and ‘instructions’; its quite stressful and sometimes dangerous.
Professional Engineer
I think I’ll leave nursing. And join the others that have moved to a brighter future.
I work on a casual basis as a School Crossing Supervisor aka ‘lollipop lady’.
Being in a regional area, dividing these duties between 3 country towns, I consider the pay to be not bad at all considering the time actually supervising and have never ever had any vehicle try to ‘mow me down’. In fact, the majority of vehicles actually stop as soon as children approach and stand behind the white line and patiently wait whilst all children have been safely supervised to the other side of the road.
In gratitude, I give these motorists a thankful wave.
I think being a School Crossing Supervisor would be a lovely job. Satisfying a nice earner.
