When economic times are tough, cutting corners on things we technically know we need but see as things we can trim from our budgets sometimes happens. And for many people, rightly or wrongly, travel insurance is often one of those things.
But then there is the flipside to that story, when you invest money in believing you are being protected, only to discover you’re not.
That seemed to be the story behind the plight of the Melbourne dad who suffered a brain haemorrhage while on holiday in Bali.
Business consultant Raj Jayarajah, 43, collapsed on the holiday island last Friday and underwent emergency brain surgery – and to be flown to Australia. His insurer, though, had other ideas and refused to fund the emergency flight, which left his family dealing with an extra level of stress.
The money to get him back on Australian shores was raised – thanks for a GoFundMe campaign that raised the needed $100,000+ that helped him get on a Life Flight back to urgent medical care.
It’s a story that’s probably inspired many people about to head overseas to check their product disclosure statement and make sure they are fully covered.

Have you ever been let down by cover when you’re tried to claim on travel insurance? Have you declined travel insurance and then found yourself in need on holiday? Do you always read the fine print and understand the exclusions and inclusions of your insurance cover? Tell us your story in the comments below.
