Coffee makes the world go round. It must do given we consume an average of 1.91 kilograms of coffee per person each year and nearly two-thirds of Aussies have some sort of coffee machine at home.
So where to find robust flavour-filled beans or pods at a reasonable price?
More than 100 coffee tasters have sipped their way through countless cups in the world’s largest coffee roasting competition to pick a winner and … handed an Aldi product the top gong, the Golden Bean.
Aldi’s Lazzio brand – supplied by Victorian-based Black Bag Roasters – triumphed over more than 800 entrants from across Australasia.
Lazzio also scored four other Golden Bean medals in the ‘super-automatic’, ‘filter’, ‘chain-store espresso’ and ‘chain-store milk-based’ categories.
If you’re wondering about the origin of the beans, Black Bag Roasters say their beans have been sourced responsibly and ethically, and are Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance or UTZ (now part of the Rainforest Alliance) Certified.
So how do you like your coffee?
According to the research, it’s a latte on the go, apparently. The most popular brew sold in cafés is a latte, followed by a flat white and a cappuccino. And about 23 per cent of all café orders are takeaway, ranking Australia fourth behind Japan, the US and Canada in terms of takeaway.
