ParticipantAnyone remember that disaster fund the previous government set up? It was for $4 billion and has since earned almost another $1 billion in interest, but still hasn’t been spent.
I don’t know how many more floods need to happen before that money gets to people who need it, but I bet people sitting in mould-filled homes or farmers facing crushing stock or crop loss could do with a bit of cash right now.
What’s the hold up?

ParticipantAre you sure there is a major hold up? I remember there was a year ago because the previous government had not set aside money to pay for what it had announced.
I have seen reports recently of quite a lot of activity around flood victims who are being offered assistance with either flood proofing their homes and business’ or relocating.
Neither is going to happen overnight though.

ParticipantHow is flood proofing a home going to help? The next flood is going to put water in their home regardless of what is done. I suppose the house could be put on stilts so it is above the waterline. I am not being sarcastic about this but let’s get real about what could happen with the next major flood event due to climate change. Flood mitigation must be researched by state and federal governments then changes made to where residential buildings are positioned in regard to new water lines.
