      Did you notice something yesterday?

That’s okay, you probably missed it. It was the autumn equinox across Australia yesterday afternoon, which means days will now start being shorter than the nights. Kind of makes it officially autumn.

The word comes from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night). The spring equinox is on 22 September.

Not to be confused with the solstice, which is when when the days or nights are at their longest.

We are on a roll here, so solstice of course also comes from the Latin sol (“sun”) and sistere (“to stand still”).

Australia’s winter solstice will be on 21 June, and the summer solstice, 21 December.

Which season do you prefer, summer or winter?
