Why drinking makes you want to eat greasy food

If you’ve ever had a night out on the booze, you’ve probably felt the urge to eat something greasy and fatty at the end of the night, like a kebab or some hot chips.
Now, researchers from the University of Sydney say they’ve pinpointed exactly why that is, and the biology at play when we drink.
The researchers found consuming alcohol increases levels of a hormone that causes people to crave protein. Snacks such as kebabs and chips have a savoury flavour that tricks the body into thinking it has consumed protein – but actually contain very little protein at all.
Lead author Dr Amanda Grech, lead author of the study says drinkers should be aware their body is trying to trick them and stick to healthier protein options instead.
“Avoid the urge to snack on low-protein, savoury snack foods,” she says.
“This will ensure your protein appetite is satisfied without over-consuming energy, leading to weight gain.”
As an alternative, Dr Grech suggests snacks like a 40g serving of cheese, unsalted nuts, chickpeas, or vegetable sticks with a tzatziki or hummus dip made with fresh ingredients.

My husband burst out laughing when I read this out to him. His response was; “Try and find a shop selling cheese, unsalted nuts, chickpeas, or vegetable sticks with a tzatziki or hummus dip made with fresh ingredients when you’re on the way home in the wee small hours.”
He also had a cooking tip for those who are interested. Cook kale with coconut oil, it makes it easier to scrape into the garbage bin.
