I pity the people in central Victoria.

A nugget worth an estimated $240,000 has been found in the ‘Golden Triangle’ region that covers Bendigo, Ballarat and St Arnaud.

The news will have every amateur prospector racing to the area to try their luck.

Having previously lived in the area, a strike like that sparks a frenzy of activity with people tramping over private land, camping illegally, leaving dogs off leash and rubbish everywhere.

And who can blame them? A report by the ABC quotes a local as saying “the ground will never run out of gold”.

According to the Geological Survey of Victoria, an estimated 75 million ounces of gold remain in the central and north-central Victorian goldfields.

This compares with the 80 million ounces of gold mined from the area around 170 years ago during the gold rush.

With those sort of odds, I might give it a shot myself.

Would you be tempted to try your luck prospecting?
