Brisbane 2032 Olympics faces major changes

The Olympics are the ultimate showcase of talent and determination. We get to see incredible athletes compete for gold, giving it their all.

Beyond the thrill of competition, the Olympics bring a sense of unity and national celebration for its host and a chance to showcase its pride on a global stage.

However, Brisbane’s dream of hosting the 2032 Games has taken an unexpected turn. The sudden shift in plans has left many wondering about the future of this grand sporting spectacle.

The original multi-billion dollar plans, which were set to bring a wave of infrastructure and global attention to the Queensland capital, have been abruptly discarded.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli has announced a drastic overhaul of the original $7.1 billion infrastructure blueprint unveiled two years ago.

The decision comes after what Crisafulli describes as years of turbulence since Brisbane was awarded the prestigious Summer Olympics and Paralympics in July 2021.

The Queensland capital was awarded the 2032 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in July 2021. This would have marked the third time Australia had hosted the Games, following Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.

In their place, a new proposal is likely to include the construction of a 60,000-seat stadium in the city’s Victoria Park.

‘I do believe we’ve got a plan that can get the show back on the road. It’s a plan to make sure that we do deliver generational infrastructure, and it’s a plan to make sure that we do host a great Games when the eyes of the world are on us,’ Crisafulli said.

‘Even the most partisan person, looking at where we are at the moment, would acknowledge that it’s been three years of chaos and crisis since we were awarded the Games.’

Two years ago, the state’s then centre-left Labor government announced plans to expand the iconic Gabba cricket ground and construct a 17,000-seat indoor stadium for the Games.

However, recent reports suggest that these plans for the revamped Gabba and the new stadium may now be scrapped.

Six of the previously planned 14 Brisbane Games venues are set to undergo changes or be axed entirely.

The federal government, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, had previously committed to funding a substantial part of the infrastructure needed for the Games.

With general elections looming in May, this development adds another layer of complexity to negotiations between the state and federal governments.

‘Of course, that there’s been some strong negotiations,’ Crisafulli said, referring to discussions with Albanese.

‘Two people of Italian descent, you’d expect that. But there’s nothing that can’t be solved over a bit of common sense and a cannoli.’
